Synopsis:
Lucas, a laid-off Canadian steelworker heads to the woods for a solo camping trip where he winds up beamed aboard a UFO. Suddenly, he’s face-to-face with a snarky alien who threatens to obliterate Canada. Lucas is given one shot to convince his unearthly captor that his homeland is worth saving. A sci-fi comedy with a maple-sweet twist - SAPPED pokes fun at Canadian pride while celebrating the quirks, inventions, and heroes that make the Great White North worth defending.
SAPPED was the Capstone project in the Virtual Production Graduate Certificate at Humber Polytechnic in the summer of 2025. A student crew fulfilled all roles that involved running the LED Volume - including the LED Wall, the MOCAP/tracking system of Optitrack, the brainbar, running Unreal Engine and Motive to create a complex ICVFX production. They skillfully executed all phases of production including, Previs, Techvis, Pre-Production via VP Producing skills, Production Design, collaborating with a cinematographer.
Uniquely, this project involved collaborating with a senior industry director - Adrian Wallace - who wrote and directed the film, SAPPED, and collaborated with the students at every step. He created a script tailored to harness the affordances of in-camera visual effects - including a spaceship and an alien (which was powered in real-time via LiveLink) in shots that contained a human actor and the RT animated alien character.
Students were supported by faculty in different technical and production domains, as well as, industry mentors and ultimately completed a very ambitious project which is set to do a festival route this coming year.
